Grootrivierspoort Hiking Trail
The Grootrivierspoort Hiking Trail offers a truly memorable adventure, combining challenging hikes with the opportunity to experience the raw beauty of the Karoo. Set in the remote and breathtaking landscape between Steytlerville and Patensie, in the Western part of the Eastern Cape’s Groot-Winterhoek Mountains, this five-day circular route takes hikers across two large farms.
It navigates rugged terrain and showcases panoramic views that evoke the beauty of the famous Baviaanskloof, offering a unique glimpse into one of South Africa’s most pristine and remote regions.
The trail offers both a full five-day experience and shorter four-day option, allowing you to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with nature. Along the way, you’ll traverse landscapes rich in wildlife, immerse yourself in peaceful isolation, and enjoy stunning vistas of the Karoo’s dramatic scenery. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility, offering an unforgettable way to explore this rugged part of the country.
The Grootrivierspoort Hiking Trail is an initiative of Hannes Horn from Bucklands Guest Farm and Bennie Rathbone from Hadley Farm. The trail starts at Bucklands, where a fully equipped cottage is available for those traveling from afar, offering a comfortable base before and after the hike. Meals can also be pre-ordered for both the day before and after the hike, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience.
