The Trail Breakdown
Day 1 – 12 km
The first day is a relatively easy walk through open landscapes, following bakkie roads and sheep footpaths along the river. The route includes some long uphill sections, taking you to the Ghê Ghê Shepherds Hut. This restored shepherd’s cottage offers a rustic, yet comfortable, overnight stop, complete with bunk beds, an outdoor bucket shower, a sink tub for bathing, a flush toilet, fridge, braai facilities, and a gas stove. The hut also has a table, chairs, and a veranda for relaxing after the day’s hike.
Day 2 – 16 km
This day’s hike takes you up and over Paardenberg, with panoramic views of Cockscomb Mountain to the east and the Camdeboo plains to the north. Along the way, you’ll encounter wildflowers and the occasional cycad. The route then descends, partly on a jeep track, to Die Afdak, Situated right on the banks of the Groot River, this fully equipped cottage is tucked under some trees, offering a lovely veranda, a braai area, and a peaceful setting for a night’s rest. The hospitality here is exceptional, and hikers can pre-arrange braai packs and drinks with Anine Rathbone, who, along with her husband Bennie, will ensure you feel right at home.
Day 3 – 10 km
The fourth day’s hike takes you up the Grootrivier Poort, a dramatic gorge flanked by towering cliffs. The route follows the river, with several crossings (where you can keep your shoes and clothes on), and plenty of opportunities for swimming. Lunch can be enjoyed at Rooibaadjie se Grot, a natural cave along the way. Your overnight stop, Oom Ben se Kamp, is a basic but scenic camp on the riverbank, where you’ll sleep in tents, with a braai area and a field toilet.
Day 4 – 11 km
The final day’s hike follows the Grootrivier Poort further north, with more river crossings and stunning scenery. The trail eventually opens up as you continue along farm roads to the end of the trail at Bucklands Farmstead, where your vehicles will be waiting.
